With only a limited timeframe between the end of one football season and the start of the next, the Facilities team at Everton FC needed to have the ceilings of two stands at Goodison either fixed or reconstructed.
Everton Football Club has a dedicated Facilities team responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the stadium. This core team of eight qualified tradesmen is supported by more than 20 contractors. As the stadium was originally completed in 1892 and has hosted more top-flight games than any other stadium in England, the facilities team’s role in reactive and proactive maintenance is key in preserving the overall structural integrity and safety of the building’s structure.
With only a limited timeframe between the end of one football season and the start of the next, the Facilities team needed to have the ceilings of two stands at Goodison either fixed or reconstructed. HS RoofClad were brought on board to complete this project, which was delivered:
Goodison Park is an old building, and the sections in the two stands that needed to be repaired or replaced are over 50 years old. There were exposed tiles on the ceiling which posed a safety hazard as they started to deteriorate. While unlikely, it was possible that sections of concrete tile could fall from the roof onto fans sitting below.
The tiles needed to be covered to ensure the stands were safe, and also to make them more aesthetically pleasing.
The two stands which needed repair work also needed two solutions.
In the first stand, a large portion of the ceiling was covered with debris Safety Netting. This means that any concrete tiles which may fall in the future will be caught in the netting, allowing the Facilities team to regularly inspect the condition of the tiles.
On the back section of the second stand, a bespoke steel subframe was installed and the tiles were entirely covered with cement fibre boarding, ensuring compliance with safety regulations and looking significantly better.
After an exploratory meeting and site survey, HS RoofClad provided the solutions to Everton’s deteriorating tile problems along with full specifications for the project. This included a proposal for how to fix the netting and board up any unsightly areas, as well as designing brackets and a system to fit everything in a safe manner that met the necessary standards and compliance regulations for a football stadium. The Facilities Manager said, “HS RoofClad were very professional, knew exactly what they were talking about, came up with solutions to my problem, and then ran the whole project.”
“Not only was there a tight turnaround time and very strict safety regulations to adhere to, but there were also seven other contractors on site who all had to work around each other.” The Facilities Manager goes on to say that, “HS RoofClad planned very well, knew exactly what had to be done, got in and got it done in the specified timeframe.
“I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending HS RoofClad – in fact, I’d be happy to introduce anyone to them and show people the work they’ve done at Goodison! I’m very happy with the product they delivered.”
