Green Roofing

A Green Roof (also commonly known as a Living Roof) is a Roofing System that is either partially or completely covered with growing greenery and vegetation, usually planted over a Waterproofing Membrane. Unlike most green spaces in densely populated areas, these types of roofs do not disrupt urban infrastructure as they blend into the surrounding scenery.

These roofing systems have been used irregularly for many years. However, it is only since the start of the Climate Change era that Green Roofs have become a popular alternative to more traditional roofs due to their long-term, environmental, and cost-saving benefits. This solution provides a range of advantages such as;

  • Longer life than conventional Roofing
  • Reduction in energy costs due to the natural insulation
  • A more peaceful, natural setting for occupants and wildlife
  • Rain Resistant – Very good at absorbing water, meaning cheaper costs for drainage systems
  • Ultraviolet Protection – Built to protect the roof membrane from UV radiation
  • Environmental benefits – Improves air quality and reduces the Urban Heat Island Effect, keeping air temperature cooler than a traditional rooftop would

When it comes to installation, there are two main types of Green Roofs to choose from. Intensive Roofs are thicker and have a minimum depth of 12.8cm (5 116 in). This solution is better when you want a system that supports a wider variety of plants and vegetation; however, they do add more weight and require more maintenance. The option with less maintenance is the extensive solution, which ranges in depth from 2cm (1316 in) to 12.7cm (5 in). These carry less greenery, but they are also lighter than the Intensive Roof option.

The best advantage of implementing a Green Roof is not just the efficiency benefits, but also the scenery. If your building is in an urban setting, it can provide an improvement to your building and the local environment. Since HS RoofClad are industry experts at Green Roof implementation, you will have assurances that your building will have an eco-friendly, long-term Roofing solution.
